A beach resort with hundreds of ways to relax and have fun
It is said that under Spanish rule pirates ransacked Huatulco, but that they didn’t succeed in stealing its beauty. The Pacific Ocean laps the shores of Huatulco’s 36 stunning beaches, spread across nine bays with warm waters and golden sands.
This area was a successful commercial port and favorite haunt of pirates including Sir Francis Drake in 1578 and Sir Thomas Cavendish in 1587. In January 1832, during the War of Independence, the Picaluga brothers betrayed the independence revolutionary Vicente Guerrero at the Bahía de Santa Cruz and handed him over to be put before a firing squad — hence the beach where this event took place is known as “La Entrega” — the handing over.
Located on the coast of the state of Oaxaca at the edge of the Sierra Madre del Sur, it spans 20 miles of Mexico’s Pacific coastline, between the Coyula and Copalita rivers. It is 140 miles from the city of Oaxaca and a 50-minute flight from Mexico City.
In the 1980s, the government tourism development agency (Fonatur) began planning for this resort, and in 1988 the Bahias de Huatulco National Park was declared a protected reserve with a world-class tourism infrastructure of luxury hotels like Las Brisas Huatulco, restaurants, nightclubs, discos, and golf courses and a small urban zone called La Crucecita.
Huatulco, Mexico, was awarded the Green Globe certification for its standard of cleanliness and commitment to environmental protection. Aside from just relaxing at beautiful hotels in Huatulco, the area offers activities such as bird watching, zip lining, rafting, horseback riding, and quad biking and a full range of water sports. Diving, snorkeling, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, and marlin fishing can be enjoyed in the emerald green sea. And if lucky, you can swim alongside dolphins and turtles.
Go on an excursion into the mountains where the world-renowned Pluma variety of coffee beans is grown, and discover coffee plantations nestled amid the ceiba trees and orchids.
Be sure to take a trip around the nine bays in a motorboat, partially covered by an awning. Check out this affordable excursion with local operators. The three-hour trip provides an excellent tour of the stunningly beautiful surroundings, tulco beaches, and fauna, plus magical stories that will transport you back in time to a mythical and adventurous era.
