Historical events, peaceful days and unparalleled cuisine come together in Nayarit

San Blas is in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit, 60 miles north of Puerto Vallarta and 45 miles northwest of the state capital of Tepic. The port of San Blas is one of the tourist icons of the Mexican Pacific, thanks to its profusion of natural beauty, gourmet delights and historical significance.

Founded in the 17th century, this destination has become popular among travelers who are passionate about the beauty of its flora and fauna, especially the wide variety of migratory birds. In fact, the abundance and variety of birds is the inspiration for the annual San Blas International Migratory Bird Festival.

A major tourist activity is fishing. If you are a devotee of the rod and tackle you will enjoy fishing dorado, sailfish and marlin and more at San Blas. In more than 20 miles of coastline, an array of beautiful unspoiled beaches such as El Rey, El Borrego, Las Islitas, Matanchén, Los Cocos, Miramar, Santa Cruz and Platanitos beaches offer you plenty of activities on the water.

La Tovara and the Laguna de Camalota, site of the crocodile farm, feature the largest variety of birds in any mangrove in Mexico. Take a panga boat ride through this reserve among the lush mangrove trees to view crocodiles, iguanas, turtles in their natural habitat.

Another boat ride option takes you up the estuary amid inspiring scenery to reach Paraje del Rey, a rustic corner of paradise with picturesque shelters built of mangrove sticks and palm fronds.

Don’t miss the island of Mexcaltitán, a Pueblo Mágico in the “Magical Villages” program. It is known as the “cradle of Mexican identity” because according to legend, it is the mythical Aztlan, the place from which the Mexica people set out to reach the city of Tenochtitlan which today is Mexico City.

A town proud of its Mexican roots, San Blas has a great variety of Huichol art, majestic carved wooden pieces covered with colorful beaded shapes and figures that illustrate the indigenous worldview.

If you want to have fun in Nayarit, San Blas is a superb option. There are so many things to do and see that you will have to choose which ones to fit into your trip.
